Overview of Shanghai Expo: 2.3 million visitors for the Monaco Pavilion

At 8 p.m. on Sunday evening, Jean-Pierre Lafon, the President of the International Exhibition Bureau (BIE), announced the official closure of the Shanghai Universal Expo, in the presence of the Chinese Prime Minister, Wen Jiabao.

The BIE flag was handed over to the Expo Milano 2015 team, symbolising the passing on of the torch. A show in celebration of the 239 participants then followed in the Cultural Performance Center, located on the exhibition site. The event attracted over 72 million visitors.

The Monaco Pavilion did extremely well registering 2.3 million visitors. This figure brings the average number of visitors per day to over 12,500.

A look back at the 6 months of the exhibition

Since the Shanghai Expo 2010 first opened on 1st May, the Monaco Pavilion hosted on average one event every month: the start of the Shanghai to Paris race, evenings orchestrated by prestigious brands, economic exchange, in particular with the Tourist Authority week and the Chamber of Economic Development, etc.

On 7th October, the Shanghai Expo 2010 paid tribute to the Principality by devoting the day to Monaco. On this occasion, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco travelled to Shanghai, accompanied by an official delegation designated to take part in the event. The day was marked by two artistic performances given by the folk group “La Palladienne” and the International Circus Festival of Monte Carlo.

The six months of the exhibition helped to increase Monaco’s international exposure.
The Principality’s participation in the Shanghai Universal Expo opened doors, particularly with
the signing of the CCtv channel broadcast agreement on the Monegasque cable network with the Monaco Telecom group.

For its pavilion, the Principality benefitted, for the very first time, from an area the same size as Monaco itself with 2,000 square metres in all, on the following theme: Monaco, past, present, future – the challenges of an evolving City-State.

Exhibitions of tomorrow...

Expo Shanghai 2010 has now switched off its lights. Yeosu, in Korea, will be hosting the international exhibition in 2012 in which Monaco will take part. The topic: “The living ocean and coast: Diversity of resources and sustainable activities” represents the ambitious project providing the necessary impetus for the implementation of a new international framework for action to combat climate change and promote responsible and sustainable development.

The next universal exhibition will take place in Milan in 2015.
