Sunday 28th September 2008, Monaco’s Heritage Day honouring science

15/09/2008 -

On Sunday 28th September and one week after France, Monaco will be staging its Heritage Day. For the 13th edition of this event, the Principality has chosen to take the general public on an adventure into the world of science. Three questions for Françoise Gamerdinger, Coordinator of Heritage Days for the Council of Europe.

‘Monaco and science’ is the theme of this year’s Heritage Day. Why this original choice and what new sites will be open to the general public?
Françoise Gamerdinger : Initiated by Prince Albert I, the Principality’s investment in the scientific domain continues to develop, perfectly illustrating a heritage positioned between inheritance and destiny. The Scientific Centre, the Princess Grace Hospital Centre and the Cardiothoracic Centre will present their latest technologies. The cross-border itinerary 2008 will take the general public to the archaeological site of Balzi Rossi in Ventimilia. An itinerary will also be on offer, which visitors will explore on electric bicycles, entitled ‘As the water flows’, enabling them to discover the water storage and supply equipment in the Principality.

Every year Heritage Day is well-frequented. What are the reasons for this success?

F. G. : For this event, the Principality’s Department for Cultural Affairs has brought together numerous entities who always work together with competence and enthusiasm. All participants are keen to make the day enjoyable and interesting for the general public. In 2007 the event attracted 30,851 visitors!

More and more European countries are celebrating Heritage Day. Why such a general infatuation with things of the past?

F. G. : In total 49 European countries celebrate Heritage Day. This event enables every one of us to visit sites that are exceptionally open to the public, to learn about the history of our respective country and also to discover the cultural diversity that makes up heritage - which is key for understanding between peoples.
